![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Laughter is a great reminder of that universal connection. And frankly, one of the best things about it was to remind me that people, underneath the cloaks of different names and accents, are actually the same. While her humor is often not "laugh out loud" it was "funny" in the sense of irony, observation of the misunderstandings that take place between people of different origins. On page 96-97 of her story, she uses the scenario of a young girl offering her and her mother to come inside and call themselves a ride when it. And I see in her story an updated version of what it must have been like for my own grandparents to come here from a foreign land, and try to make their way in the cauldron of America. In the story Funny in Farsi by Firoozeh Dumas, she conveys that American’s can be very helpful and accepting (despite the very evident language barrier) to foreigners who are coming to our country. Firoozeh's voice and story make me feel like I know her, and share her experience. Now 40+ years later, I have met my second Persian, and based on my experience listening to this memoir, I am happy to say my first impression was correct. He was a sweet, gentle person, and while I know it was wrong of me to judge an entire nation by this one encounter, his charm certainly disposed me kindly towards his country. I met my first Persian in 1965, a fellow student at the University of Wisconsin, and when he told me he was Persian, I didn't know where it was, or what it meant. ![]() I am on a quest to read memoirs, and my search through Audible turned up this one, which I had not heard of before, but based on the blurb, thought it would be interesting. ![]() ![]() ![]() In a desperate bid to save her husband, Elizabeth bundles her infants and sets out on the long trek to Montreal. I refuse to make any argument with statistics compiled by the institutions and associations that I indict. The mayors that curse the rioters and the looters (Mayor Daley of Chicago has ordered them summarily executed in the streets) ignore the fact that their bosses have looted the world!!! In order for capitalism to continue to rule, any action that threatens the right of a few individuals to own and control public property must be prohibited and curtailed whatever the cost in resources (the international wing of the repressive institutions has spent one and one-half trillion dollars since World War II), whatever the cost in blood (My Lai, Augusta, Georgia, Kent State, the Panther trials, the frame-up of Angela Davis)! The national repressive institutions (police, National Guard, army, etc.) are no less determined. I sent the keeper a blank check for a headstone - and two extra sites- blood in my eye!!!įor their freedom to prey on the world’s people. His grave was supposed to be behind your grandfather’s and grandmother’s. I went to Mount Vernon August 7th, 1971, to visit the grave site of my heart your keepers murdered in cold disregard for life. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Sachs was giving up her patrol route for a desk job and isn’t too pleased to work with the caustic Rhyme. Rhyme is the only person qualified to solve this case, the only person who can match wits with this Bone Collector, but since he can’t leave his apartment he chooses the beautiful Amelia Sachs to be his legs and eyes in the field-Sachs being the dedicated patrolwoman who first responded to the crime scene, shutting down traffic on two streets and stopping a train to make sure the crime scene wasn’t contaminated. The killer has another victim, leaving clues for the crime scene investigators about her whereabouts. And New York is packed with visitors and UN delegates attending a major conference.
